Wel­come to ABODAQ! We are an asso­ci­ation of band and orches­tra dir­ect­ors from across Queens­land who pro­mote and organ­ise the con­tin­ued pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment of mem­bers. You can become involved in the reju­ven­a­tion of our chapter in many ways includ­ing par­ti­cip­at­ing in pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment events, par­tak­ing in social activ­it­ies, being involved in com­mit­tee work and/or con­trib­ut­ing your ideas. We look for­ward to wel­com­ing pre­vi­ous and new mem­bers and to build­ing a strong and vital association.

Pres­id­ent, Dr Lewes Ped­dell

Dr. Lewes Ped­dell is Dir­ector of the Can­ter­bury Col­lege Arts Academy. Prior to this appoint­ment he was Dir­ector of Music at St. Paul’s School from 1989 to mid-1999 and was abroad in the USA from mid-1999 through to the end of 2007. In the USA he com­pleted his Mas­ters in Music (Wind Con­duct­ing) and a Ph.D. in Music (Music Ed/Conducting) at the Uni­ver­sity of Min­nesota. After his three year res­id­ency at Min­nesota, he was a fac­ulty mem­ber of the Sun­der­man Con­ser­vat­ory of Music, Gettys­burg Col­lege (2002–2007) as Dir­ector of Bands and Orches­tral Activ­it­ies and taught courses in the Bach­elor of Sci­ence Music Edu­ca­tion pro­gram. Lewes was State Chair of Pennsylvania Chapter of the Col­lege Band Dir­ect­ors National Asso­ci­ation, Col­legi­ate Rep­res­ent­at­ive to the Pennsylvanian Chapter of the Amer­ican String Teach­ers Asso­ci­ation, and guest con­duc­ted honor bands and orches­tras in Pennsylvania, New York, Long Island, Mary­land and Neb­raska. Among his other most influ­en­tial con­duct­ing teach­ers are: Craig Kirch­hoff, Stu­art Malina, and Ralph Hult­gren. He is also a gradu­ate of the Bris­bane Col­lege of Advanced Edu­ca­tion with a Dip.T., and the QCM with a Bach­elor of Music and Grad. Dip. in Performance.

Vice Pres­id­ent, David Jones

David holds a Bach­elor of Arts Music and Gradu­ate Dip­loma in Edu­ca­tion from Queens­land Uni­ver­sity of Tech­no­logy and a Mas­ters of Music in Com­pos­i­tion from the Queens­land Con­ser­vat­orium. He is cur­rently Dir­ector of Music at Hill­brook Anglican School, Enog­gera, a role that sees him dir­ect­ing ensembles and teach­ing classroom and instru­mental music. David is also heav­ily involved in com­munity music as the musical dir­ector of the Bris­bane Muni­cipal Con­cert Band since 1992 and more recently as the dir­ector of the Bris­bane City Big Band. As a com­poser David is pub­lished under the Brolga Music label and enjoys reg­u­lar per­form­ances of his works through­out Aus­tralia and internationally.

Ross Dovey

Ross is a gradu­ate from the Vic­torian Col­lege of the Arts and the Uni­ver­sity of South­ern Queens­land. From 1978 to 1989, he was a per­cus­sion­ist with the Queens­land Sym­phony Orches­tra and taught privately. In 1990, he moved to teach­ing full-time at Vil­lan­ova Col­lege and then with Edu­ca­tion Queens­land. Ross left teach­ing for five years, but has recently returned and is a multi-instrumental teacher, mainly in the bay­side area.

Alisa has a Bach­elor of Arts Music and a Post Gradu­ate Dip­loma of Edu­ca­tion and has been employed by Edu­ca­tion Queens­land for the past 10 years.  As a con­ductor, Alisa has held pos­i­tions with the Young Con­ser­vat­orium Sym­phonic Wind Ensemble and the Queens­land State Youth Wind Orches­tra.  She has also been the guest con­ductor of the Percy Grainger Orches­tra at the Con­ser­vat­orium State Hon­ours Ensemble Pro­gram, in both North Queens­land and Bris­bane, and the MOST pro­gram run by Edu­ca­tion Queens­land.  Alisa has also lec­tured in con­duct­ing at Grif­fith Uni­ver­sity Queens­land Conservatorium.

Alisa has had a lengthy involve­ment in the world of com­munity music-making and has been the musical dir­ector of two com­munity con­cert bands.  Alisa has run many pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment work­shops for instru­mental music teach­ers and con­duct­ors and has adju­dic­ated at numerus com­pet­i­tions and fest­ivals through­out Queens­land and New South Wales.   Alisa is cur­rently the Head of Instru­mental Music at Kelvin Grove State Col­lege, teach­ing instru­mental and classroom music as well as dir­ect­ing six ensembles.

Craig DabelsteinCraig Dabel­stein com­menced piano stud­ies at age seven and took up the sax­o­phone at age twelve. He has Bach­elor of Arts Music and Bach­elor of Music degrees from the Queens­land Con­ser­vat­orium of Music. Craig held the prin­cipal alto and tenor sax­o­phone chairs in the Aus­tralian Wind Orches­tra and has toured nation­ally and inter­na­tion­ally. He has been an aug­ment­ing mem­ber of the Queens­land Pops Orches­tra, the Queens­land Phil­har­monic Orches­tra and The Queens­land Orches­tra. For many years Craig was a mem­ber of the Queens­land Sax­o­phone Quar­tet and has been a sax­o­phone teacher at the Queens­land Con­ser­vat­orium of Music. He is cur­rently the sax­o­phone teacher and a band con­ductor at Bris­bane Girls Gram­mar School. He has been the copy­ed­itor of The Aus­tralian Cla­ri­net and Sax­o­phone Magazine, is a reg­u­lar reviewer for Music Forum magazine and is a research asso­ci­ate for the series of books Teach­ing Music Through Per­form­ance in Band. Craig is cur­rently the editor of the com­plete works of Dr. David Whitwell.

Craig Dav­id­son
Craig Dav­id­son is nat­ive from Bris­bane and gradu­ated from the Queens­land Con­ser­vat­orium of Music with a Dip­loma of Music Per­form­ance major­ing in trum­pet in 1984. He worked for Edu­ca­tion Queens­land on and around the Gold Coast area for twenty three years before begin­ning his pos­i­tion with Instru­mental Music Aus­tralia as Assist­ant Man­ager and Edu­ca­tion Spe­cial­ist in 2008. As a music edu­cator, Craig has been instru­mental in build­ing large suc­cess­ful band pro­grams in many Bris­bane and Gold Coast State Primary and Sec­ond­ary School and is highly involved in the New Hori­zons Adult starter band pro­gram. He is act­ive as a guest con­ductor and adju­dic­ator through­out Queens­land, New South Wales, and New Zea­l­and and is a sort after clini­cian in School Hon­our Band pro­grams through­out Queens­land. As a pro­fes­sional musi­cian, Craig has been a fre­quent per­former with the Chan­cel­lor Big Band on the Gold Coast and as a free-lance trum­pet player in Queens­land. As a com­poser, Craig has had many of his works per­formed by pro­fes­sional groups across Aus­tralia, the most recent being a level 4 Con­cert Band work entitled “Where I Stood” which was deb­uted at the Gold Coast Eistedd­fod in 2008.

Myra Jan­iczak
Myra Jan­iczakMyra Jan­iczak com­menced play­ing trom­bone in lower sec­ond­ary school in Eng­land, but it was evid­ent that short arms and trom­bones don’t mix, so switched to Euphonium. She con­tin­ued play­ing in school and com­munity bands and orches­tras through­out sec­ond­ary school and then joined the Police Brass Band at the end of school. On emig­rat­ing to Aus­tralia in 1977 Myra joined a com­munity con­cert band, star­ted les­sons and took AMEB exams.  At forty years of age she decided to go back to school and received her Senior Cer­ti­fic­ate in 2000. Myra was encour­aged to apply for a place at the Queens­land Con­ser­vat­orium of Music and she com­pleted a Music Stud­ies degree on euphonium in 2007, and a Gradu­ate Dip­loma of Education/Music in 2008. Myra has been involved in com­munity bands and orches­tras since 1977, is a mem­ber of two Sal­va­tion Army Bands and is a Brass Instru­mental teacher at Prince of Peace Lutheran Col­lege and a relief Classroom Music teacher p-12 for Qld Edu­ca­tion and Cath­olic Education.
