State Library of Queensland Band Exhibition 2013

Bands are an integral part of Queensland’s cultural memory, and in May 2013 State Library of Queensland will launch a major exhibition about Queensland bands. The exhibition will explore bands throughout Queensland’s history, and will cover all sorts, including marching bands, brass bands and pipe bands, folk and bush bands, jazz and dance bands, and rock bands.

The role of State Library is to collect and preserve Queensland history for the future, and we need your help to collect resources relating to Queensland bands. Early research for this exciting exhibition has identified significant gaps in our collection which we would like you to help us fill.

If you have any items relating to any Queensland band of any type, from colonial times to the present, and you would like to donate to the State Library, please contact the Queensland Music Coordinators [contact details are below]. Items to consider donating include photos, film footage, programs, posters, leaflets, playbills, concert tickets, membership lists, sound recordings, sheet music, and any other related memorabilia.

Many of us have been involved in a band of some type, and have enjoyed both the music and the social and community life they offer. Others have been band fans. Whether you are a band member or a band follower, the Queensland Music Coordinators would like to hear from you. All items donated to the State Library are preserved in archival conditions to ensure their availability for current and future generations of Queenslanders, as well as researchers from around the world.

Members Survey Results 2010

Late in 2010 all members of ABODA QLD were invited to participate in an online survey. This survey sought to collect data that could be used to help shape future ABODA QLD events and projects. We had 51 respondents from a membership base of about 100. Respondents were almost equally divided between male and female. A review of years teaching experience revealed a representation from just beginning a career through to 30+ years! Results to Question 6 indicated that sessions: “Rehearsal Pedagogy” and “Conducting Master class Workshops,” as well as having “Guest Conductor(s) available to rehearse members’ ensembles” had the strongest support (see Table 1 for more details).

Table 1.

Percentage of respondents who agreed or strongly agreed that they would attend these sessions.

Among the initiatives being undertaken by ABODA QLD in 2011-12, that are in part based on the results of this survey, is a three-week Queensland residency by Dr. Mark Fonder (Ithaca College USA). This residency will include professional development events in Brisbane, Townsville and Rockhampton focusing on Rehearsal Pedagogy and having a conducting master class component. In addition, there are 10 days set aside for Mark to guest conduct/rehearse ensembles of all levels.

Commission Consortium

The Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association Queensland is proud to announce the inaugural ABODA QLD Commissioning Consortium—a unique opportunity for ABODA QLD members to have a say in the repertoire of the future. It is very difficult for schools to afford commissions on their own. A consortium pools your money with that of people from other schools and ensembles and makes it possible for directors to share with their students the commissioning of a new work, as well as the joy of performing the premiere of the work in their area. ABODA QLD hopes the commissioning project will become a yearly activity—a tangible sign of the work of ABODA QLD to promote our profession.

Composer

We are happy to announce that Brian Hogg will be the composer of our first consortium. Brian is well known to all Australian band directors and is currently the Creative Arts Director for The Salvation Army Eastern Victoria Division. His well-known and highly regarded compositions for band include Llwyn Onn, In Stillness, The New Anzacs, The Stone Guest and Fanfare and Processional.

Difficulty level

The commissioned work will be grade 3 standard and 3½ minutes long, intended for the majority of secondary school ensembles. It will be scored for standard concert band instrumentation and is intended to have an empha¬sis on emotional content and artistic merit.

Cost

Total cost to be a member of the 2011 ABODA QLD Commissioning Consortium is $250.00. Each participating school will receive a full score and all parts in PDF format, allowing you to print as many parts as your ensemble requires.

Time frame

The composition is scheduled to be delivered to consortium members in July 2011.

Premiere performances

The world premiere will be performed by the Wind Symphony at the Maryborough Conference Gala Concert in early July 2011; however, each first performance by a participating ensemble is considered a premiere. The names of all participating schools (or community ensembles) and their directors will be printed on the cover page of the conductor’s score. Consortium members will receive exclusive performance rights to the work for six months after the premiere.

A Concise History of the Wind Band

Whether used for personal reference or as a text for a class in the history of the wind band this book is the most comprehensive single-volume history of the wind band ever written. This volume draws on the author’s multi-volume History and Literature of the Wind Band and follows the development of the wind band through the civic, court, church and military performances of the Ancient World through the nineteenth century. Written by Dr. David Whitwell and edited by Craig Dabelstein.

Dr. David Whitwell is a graduate (‘with distinction’) of the University of Michigan and the Catholic University of America, Washington DC (PhD, Musicology, Distinguished Alumni Award, 2000) and has done post-graduate study at the University of Vienna and has studied conducting with Eugene Ormandy and at the Akademie fur Musik, Vienna. Prior to coming to Northridge, Dr. Whitwell participated in concerts throughout the United States and Asia as Associate First Horn in the USAF Band and Orchestra in Washington DC, and in recitals throughout South America in cooperation with the United States State Department. David Whitwell studied conducting at the Akademie für Musik, Vienna, with Hans Swarowsky, and with Eugene Ormandy. He has conducted resident ensembles in Austria, Switzerland, Israel, Japan, Wales, England, Germany, The Netherlands, Bolivia, Peru, Korea, Taiwan, Russia and the United States, among them the Philadelphia Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the Czech Radio Orchestras of Brno and Bratislava, and The National Youth Orchestra of Israel.

Funding for Hubs

The ABODA QLD Management Committee has set aside a $1500.00 allowance to support activities in each of the ABODA QLD Hubs.

To access this funding existing Hubs just need to submit a proposed PD session to the Management Committee  – as per the Hub guidelines – and stipulate the use of some or all of the allowance in the budget.
