Coming up at QBOC2010 Jon Adams and Richard Settle from Instrumental Music Australia will present a session on ‘Music theory online’. During this session teachers will have the opportunity to view and trial a new online software program designed to take the drudgery out of teaching theory. This program, designed with the music teacher in mind, has led to the development of a partnership with the Australian Music Examinations Board to offer online exams. Teachers will experience the ease of use of this program and discover its unique international patent pending design which incorporates monitoring of students’ progress, active screenshots of students work, all contained within a fun, interactive self-marking environment. A first for Australia!
Jon has been an instrumental teacher with Education Queensland for more than twenty years in the Brisbane region and graduated with a Bachelor of Music as well as a Diploma in Education. Around ten years ago he indentified the need for a fun way for students to learn music theory. He then formed a partnership with Luke Grant, a musician and computer programmer, and began Web Ed Development, a company that aims to create a new group of technologies that will allow online music education to become a reality. Web Ed Development is now the online learning partner for the Australian Music Examinations Board and they have launched their first joint project making Music Theory exams available online.
Richard Settle has been both an instrumental music educator and a professional trumpet player for more than twenty years and is well known throughout Brisbane and Queensland. He has worked in both the state and private school sectors and is in demand as a clinician, conductor and adjudicator. Following three years living in Japan he returned to Australia where he is now Managing Director of Instrumental Music Australia, a music retail business with a strong focus on education and service. He remains passionate about working with young people and enabling them to be the best they can be. He is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium with a Diploma of Music and has a Graduate Diploma in Further Education & Training from the University of Southern Queensland.
